Yukon News joins Black Press publishing group

Newspaper The Yukon News has joined Black Press, the largest publisher of independent newspapers in Canada.

Starting Tuesday, the paper will come under the Black Press banner, which publishes 150 newspapers across the country.

Black Press CEO Rick O'Connor says readers needn't fear or expect and major changes to editorial content and direction. "We totally rely on a decentralized approach when it comes to writing our newspapers and an editorial perspective," he said.

All staff of the newspaper have been retained, with the exception of publisher Steven Robertson and his wife, because the publishing role will be rolled into the larger Black Press family.

The move is a symptom of a larger trend in publishing to consolidate, which allows for lower costs through efficiencies. George Affleck, the general manager of the B.C. and Yukon Community Newspapers Association, says only about 10 per cent of the association's members are still independently run.

The rest have consolidated into larger publishing groups, which gives them a stronger financial backing and access to more advertisers. The move to Black Press could allow the Yukon News to soon publish parts of the paper in colour, the newspaper said.

"The purchase of the Yukon News by Black Press is 100 per cent a vote of confidence in a fantastic newspaper," Affleck said.
