Cogeco remains opposed to $3.38B Bell Astral deal

Cogeco Cable Inc. says it remains opposed to a plan by Astral Media Inc. to sell the bulk of its assets to BCE Inc. despite changes to the deal, which was blocked by the CRTC last year.

The broadcast regulator will hold hearings May on Bell's revised application to buy Astral after rejecting the deal last fall.

However, Cogeco says its reasons for opposing the $3.38-billion deal remain the same.

The cable company says such a deal would still give an already dominant BCE too large a share of the broadcasting market.

However, the Competition Bureau has given its OK for Corus Entertainment Inc. to buy the remaining half of Teletoon and other specialty TV interests from Astral.

The sale was a condition of the Competition Bureau's approval of Astral's takeover by BCE Inc.
