People heading from certain parts of the United States into Canada should make sure not to take any raw poultry products.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is advising that new cases of avian influenza have occurred in Montana and South Dakota. This comes after cases were already reported in the following states:
- Arkansas
- Missouri
- Minnesota
- California
- Idaho
- Oregon
- Washington
In response, the CFIA says it is implementing restrictions to protect Canada's poultry resources.
These include a ban on bringing uncooked poultry products such as eggs or raw pet food into Canada from the affected areas. See a full list of restricted items below.
- Live birds and hatching eggs
- Eggs, yolks and egg whites
- Poultry meat (other than fully cooked, canned or commercially sterile products)
- Raw pet foods containing poultry products
- Feathers
- Poultry manure and litter
- Laboratory material containing poultry products/by-products
Pet birds are permissible with official certification from the United States Department of Agriculture and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. However, commercial imports of the above specified products from the quarantined zones are on hold until further notice.
There is no immediate risk to human health associated with these food products. The measures are precautionary to prevent the spread of avian flu into Canada.
