The campaign to form the next Greek government is officially underway, with the country's most recent Prime Minister decrying his anti-bailout opponents as a threat that could lead the country into default.

The election was formally called by posting a decree on the door to parliament two days after lawmakers rejected Prime Minister Antonis Samaras' candidate for president, automatically triggering a return to the polls.

The opposition party, Syriza, has promised to re-negotiate the terms of the country's $291-billion US bailout on more favourable terms, but insists it can do so without taking unilateral actions against leaders from other eurozone countries and the International Monetary Fund.

Samaras says that's a fantasy and insists a Syriza win would lead the country to default.

The party did not comment about Samaras' remark but accused the government of "stale fear mongering."

The Jan. 25 vote will mark a showdown between Samaras' conservative New Democracy party, which imposed unpopular budget cuts under Greece's bailout deal, and the leftwing Syriza party of Alexis Tsipras, who wants to cancel austerity measures along with a chunk of Greek debt.
