BlackBerry has laid off 65 employees in its developer relations group, a week after the smartphone maker announced a partnership with the Amazon Appstore and CEO John Chen told reporters that the company's previously announced job cuts were nearly done.
According to a statement issued the company on Tuesday, BlackBerry will instead be focusing "on new programs that will drive enterprise application development."
Chen emphasized the company's focus on the enterprise market at the company's annual general meeting on Thursday.
"Getting into the enterprise and building a platform we could provide value-added service on an ongoing basis, provides a pretty high traction and margin," Chen told reporters in a scrum following the meeting.
"That is going to be, in my opinion, how we're going to turn around this [company] into profitability and growth."
His comments came on the same day the company announced a small profit of $23 million and smaller-than expected adjusted losses for the first quarter, boosting the stock price.
Earlier in the week, BlackBerry announced a partnership with the Amazon Appstore that will allow users of the 10.3 operating system access to hundreds of apps like Pinterest, Netflix and Groupon. The smartphone maker has been criticized for the lack of applications available for its devices.
"For the first time we finally – quote unquote – solved a big part of our application ecosystem problems," said Chen on Thursday.
