General Motors' list of recalled vehicles grows by another 8,560 midsized cars, and the U.S. government is set to make a "major announcement" today about the company's handling of recalls.
On Friday, GM announced it is recalling 8,560 Buick Lacrosse and Chevrolet Malibu sedans — including 209 in Canada — to fix a problem with the front brakes.
It's the sixth recall announced by the company this week and the 24th this year. Since January, GM has recalled about 11.2 million cars and trucks.
GM says in documents posted Friday by U.S. safety regulators that rear brake rotors were mistakenly installed on the front. The rear rotors are thinner, so brake pads will wear faster and could lose contact with the brake calipers. That could cause longer stopping distances and brake failure.
The company says it has no reports of crashes or injuries due to the problem.

It's the latest twist in the company's new plan to get ahead of safety concerns with full disclosure and much quicker action on recall plans if any sort of possible safety concern is uncovered.
The company has been in hot water this year after it became clear that it knew about a problem with ignition switches turning off for at least a decade before starting any sort of recall plan.
That problem has been linked to at least 13 deaths and has prompted multiple investigations, including one by the Justice Department.
U.S. officials are set to make a major announcement about that investigation at 11:15 a.m. in Washington on Friday.
