It's easy to get pulled into the excitement created by a long-shot stock, says Satish Rai, chief investment officer of TD Asset Management, but investors should be in markets for the long term.

Rai looks back on some of his own investing mistakes in this video interview with CBC's Lang & O'Leary Exchange, saying the key thing is to find real businesses with real opportunities.

It doesn't much matter then when you invest, as long as you look at the long-term goals, he said.

"Absolutely invest in quality, second, keep your emotions in check, make sure you invest on fact, not rumour, and finally, it's about the long term game. It should be a marathon and not a sprint," he said..
