Heinz closure in Leamington sparks political response

Several politicians, from every level government, spoke out about the closure of the Leamington, Ont., Heinz plant.

H.J. Heinz Co.'s announcement that the company will close its plant in Leamington, Ont. has sparked an immediate response from all levels of government.

"Today is a very difficult day," Mayor of Windsor Eddie Francis said in a written statement. "The Heinz plant...is the centre piece of the community's pride, innovation, and commitment to quality in their products, enduring for over 100 years."

The plant is set to close in June 2014.  740 full-time jobs will be lost.

Local MP Jeff Watson offered his support to the workers and residents and Leamington.

"This is devastating news for families and the regional economy,"  Watson said on his facebook page.

The Conservative MP for Essex said he's reached out to Conservative cabinet ministers about the shutdown.

"We have already spoken to Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz and Federal Development Minister Gary Goodyear about readiness and programs to help invest in Leamington's economy."

Queens Park also offered support after the plant's closure was made public.

"I am extremely disappointed with the decision," Ontario's Minister of Economic Development, Eric Hoskins, said in a release. "Our government is ready and willing to offer support and resources to affected workers at this difficult time."
