After remaining steady during the summer, the number of people receiving regular EI benefits dropped to 503,800 in September, down 8.8 per cent from the level of a year ago.
Statistics Canada said Thursday that on a monthly basis, the number of regular EI beneficiaries dipped by 7,100 people or 1.4 per cent.
The all-time high in Canada for people receiving EI benefits was almost 850,000 during the recession of 2009.
While down on a national basis, that wasn't the case in every province. British Columbia and Ontario posted notable declines of more than eight per cent, while Saskatchewan and Alberta exhibited smaller declines, the data agency said. At the same time, there were more people receiving benefits in Quebec and Manitoba, as well as in the Atlantic provinces.
The data agency said there was no one reason to explain the drop, as the overall number reflects people receiving benefits, people finding work who no longer need them, and people who've been unemployed long enough for their benefits to expire.
On an annual basis, every single job category has had fewer beneficiaries in the past year, with one exception — natural and applied science occupations. The number of regular EI beneficiaries in natural and applied science occupations rose by 5.5 per cent in September, the seventh consecutive month of year-over-year increases for this group.
Every other job category saw fewer people receiving benefits, and the declines ranged from four per cent in management to 17.8 per cent in health occupations, the group that's experiencing the fastest pace of decline.
The number of initial claims for EI is an indicator of future demand for benefits, and that too, was lower in September.
Following a notable decline in August, the number of initial and renewal claims was essentially unchanged in September, at 225,300. Compared with September 2012, claims were down 3.1 per cent.
