CBCNews.ca takes home 8 online publishing awards

CBCNews.ca has taken home eight awards at the annual Canadian Online Publishing Awards ceremony in Toronto, including best website design and online-only article or series of articles.

"I think it's amazing that we won such a broad cross-section of awards that recognizes our technical advancements, our design but also our incredible journalism when it comes to investigative stories and also challenging how we tell stories in digital from an interactive standpoint," said Marissa Nelson, director of digital media.

"We could only win this many awards with an incredible team across the country and I think it speaks to how we're connecting with Canadians, whether it's through our stories, how we tell them or through social media ... And that's resonating with Canadians."

Three local digital websites — Hamilton, Saskatoon and Kitchener-Waterloo — were recognized at the awards.

"All three of those sites are incredibly innovative in terms of their design, whether it's in terms of being mobile first or changing their site based on the time of day," Nelson said.

"Local digital is a major focus for us, so to have those three local sites recognized was incredible for us."

Founded in 2009, the online awards cover news media, consumer magazines and business-to-business media. In each area, 15 awards are presented.

CBCNews.ca drew the most nominations of any entrant in any category with nine nominations in the news media section. Maclean's was second with eight in consumer magazines, while the Globe and Mail and the Toronto Star tied with seven each in news media.

The awards are produced by the publishing industry journal MastheadOnline to honour the best in Canadian online publishing.
